KYOTO: Izuju いづ重

What comes to mind when someone mentions sushi? For me, I instantaneously picture the edomae nigiri sushi.
But, DO YOU KNOW? Sushi can be made in many different ways?
Today I will be introducing Kyoto styled sushi - Kyozushi. ( sushi with cured fish - this is because back in the days, kyoto had a tough time getting fresh fish, I reckon it must be due to location)

We dropped by one of the more popular or if not, Most popular Kyozushi joint in Kyoto.
This is after we went to Fushimi Inari and attempted to climb up to the peak. I almost lost my life trying, because I am very unfit hahaha.

Really puffed out

Anyway, yes. Back onto sushi.....

We ordered the B set for 2 people (3208yen) and Gudi sushi (4320yen)

We also ordered their winter special fish fin sake.
Really fishy smelling and tasting, but I love it !

I was so full at the end of the dinner because Kyozushi prides themselves for having just a small slice of fish on top of A HUGE AMOUNT of rice.
Ohgosh, I think I ate at least 2 bowls worth of rice that night.
Nicholas really likes this style of sushi, however, I don't think its my cup of tea.
Nonetheless, definitely worth a try when you're in Kyoto !

KYOTO: Honke Owariya Shijo 御用蕎麦司 本家尾張屋

Located in an atmospheric old wooden building, Honke Owariya is arguably the best, and oldest ( Since 1465! Though they started off as a confectionary shop rather than a soba restaurant) soba restaurant in all of Kyoto.
From my multiple internet scouring, I have been informed that a long queue is to be expected and to decrease your queue time you should be there as early as possible.

We got there half an hour past their opening time and..

Finally after half an hour....

Next in line !

 Extensive menu!
Very patiently waiting for my food!

I had the most expensive dish in the restaurant - Hassun Tsuki Horai Soba ( 3024yen) which comprises of
1) 5 layer Soba with 8 toppings (Shitake mushroom, Thin slices of omelette, sesame seeds, shrimp tempura, wasabi, nori, japanese leeks and grated daikon) with kyoto style hors d'oeuvre

Nicholas had the Soba with tempura by the side 1944yen

Comparing mine and his, it's so obvious who has the more starred dish :p

We finished off the meal with some soba confectionary and traditional Japanese sweets.
