I believe that there is going to be a time in everyone's life whereby you are at a crossroad and there's 2 choices. You can't make up your mind. The public opinions are divided, perhaps your closest supports are also giving differing suggestions. You're more torn apart than ever.
All your life, you have been told that it’s important to have a secure life. You studied hard, maybe stumbled along the way but somehow still scraped into getting what society deem as a good degree, getting a stable job with a midrange salary and having what most would define as a "comfortable life".
You look around and most of your friends are taking this safe route, living a happy life and you start to think that’s not a bad life after all. Are you out of your mind to even be swayed and think of getting out of this safe space? You have a comfortable place to live in, you are able to pay your bills on time, you have excess to splurge on good meals and you can take one or maybe 2 or perhaps 3 vacations every year. What else do you need to be happy?
It is certainly a very comfortable life, but is this really what you are after? Or are you craving more? Because although comfortable, you always knew this job was never really for you. Apart from the occasional job satisfaction, you dread going to work, you dread hearing the beep of the pager, you're at work counting hours to when you knock off.
You are afraid of change, just like everyone else, you say perhaps since you're doing okay, you should press on, just like another product on the machine line.
You say maybe change should come after a few years, maybe after you get further somewhere in your career, at least you have something to fall back upon if things doesn't work out. But sometimes there's only one golden hour. And then suddenly years fly by and you realise what you have missed out by seeing someone else live their dream and relishing each moment, as if there’s nothing in this world that can make them happier.
Perhaps you just have to take that leap of faith, perhaps take a fumble while at it and try to pick yourself up. And its likely no matter which route you decide to take, life is still going to be an uphill battle, maybe one route more steep than the other. You can't really say whether your life will be better, you hear horror stories that in the short term your life is going to be hell. But hell or not, at least you know that you tried. Maybe sometimes we just need to remind ourselves that you don't have to do what everyone else is doing.
You've been watching Nicholas Tse's culinary show; episode always starts with 一个人要得到从来没有得到过的事 就要付出从来没有付出过事. If you want something that you've never achieved, you need to put in your best effort. And Steve Jobs once said “I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself, if today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I knew I need to change something.”
Don’t let small minds convince you that your dreams are too big. So go out there and make that dream come true and don’t be afraid to dream a little bigger.
