Nick and I decided to take advantage of the good weather last Friday and head over to Mclaren Vale for lunch. We were tossing up between eating at d'Arrys and the cube, but settled for the former since we've already had degustation at the cube once read here !( which was awesome ! but also wallet breaking hahah. And to make things worse, we just donated $250 to the locksmith because we locked ourselves out of the house the other day :/ ) and I haven't tried d'Arrys yet.
Actually, let me try to tell the story of how we got locked out in the most neutral stance possible. Up till now, we are still undecided who is more at fault haha. The people I've told feels that Nick should assume greater responsibility, conversely, the people Nick has told feels that I should assume greater responsibility. So yes, here it goes.
Nick's mom is here for a few days to help us pack the house although we have done zero packing. Because both Nick and myself work, Nick gave her his keys ( his keys is usually attached to his pouch which also contains his car keys).
It was a Wednesday night, Victor ( Nick's brother) is on call for the hospital so we decided we were gonna ubereats to his house.
However, I went to the market in the morning with Nick's mother and we decided to buy a trout, some mushrooms and some grapes to bring up to Victor's.
Dinner is at 6.30pm. I had work in the afternoon and ended around 6pm.
Nick came home from work at 5 and his mother let him into the garage ( because she had his keys), she says that after letting Nick into the garage she handed the keys over to him. Nick took the keys and placed them on the kitchen top instead of attaching it back to his pouch.
At 6.15pm, Nick called to ask if I was on the way, and I said yes, I'm 10 minutes away, would you like to come down I'll meet you downstairs and I'll drive to Victor's.
During the conversation, I could here Nick frantically clicking away - he is playing some computer game - and he said " Nah, come up first"
So I parked the car, went up to the apartment, nobody was ready yet. I put my bag down, went to the bathroom, took out the trout and mushrooms. At some point Nick was going abit crazy saying " we are late already! It's 6.30pm already, hurry" so his mom went to get the grapes.
Nick was not carrying anything, he was standing by and essentially just asking us to hurry.
I carried the trout, mushrooms and my phone and left the house. Nick's mom followed. Nick was the last one out, the door slammed shut and suddenly Nick said " who got the keys?"
I didn't have the keys because I only brought my phone.
Nick brought his pouch but the keys were not attached to it because it was left on the kitchen table by him when he came into the house earlier.
So.....
Who has a greater fault?
The more I look at this picture, the more I feel that this is potentially magazine cover worthy hahaha.
d'Arrys offer both degustation and ala carte, all the items on the degustation menu are offered on the ala carte menu as well; usually Nick and I like to go for the degustation, but we decided to go for ala carte this time because so many of the starters sounded really interesting ! And also because we were gonna have a huge dinner at Bai Long after hahahaha.
Started lunch with some d’Arry’s bread with Murray River pink salt crusted house churned butter $5
Almond stuffed, crumbed and fried local green olives
with lime aioli $6
I personally really dislike olives, so I definitely will not recommend to people who do not like olives, but if you're an olive lover, This is really pretty good.
d’arry’s verandah signature dish: Australian lobster medallion
with blue swimmer crab and prawn ravioli,
lobster bisque and chilli sambal $35
This is SO GOOD! I recommend everybody to get this
Miso glazed smoked eel with fresh kolrabi, fried shitake rice,
fresh Tasmanian wasabi and dashi emulsion $28
If you choose the degustation, you get the eel, but you can top up $10 and get the lobster medallion, I highly recommend giving this a miss and just get the lobster for $10
Not to say that this eel wasn't a good dish, it was. Its just that the lobster was 10x better!
Sake cured tuna with nashi pear, pickled daikon, cucumber
and wakame salad, ginger jelly and puffed wild rice $28
I really enjoyed this dish as well
Coarse cut truffled beef tartare with
grated egg, caper berries and toasted focaccia $26
Picture of my tuna and tartare side by side haha
We decided to go for the Beef fillet and seared ox tongue with
capsicum, chimichurri salsa, fried Brussels sprouts
and lemon parmesan polenta chips as a shared main $40
The star of the dish was the seared ox tongue, it was so SOFT !
Medium rare always for steak please !
I was already really full by then, but you can't end a meal without dessert, can you?
Just had to order their 2 signature desserts.
Soft centred chocolate pudding with Dead Arm curd,
chocolate ice cream, d’Arry’s aero and cocoa nibs $19
Passionfruit and Noble Wrinkled Riesling soufflé with pouring cream $19
Nick doesn't really understand the basics of food photography does he hahaha. I was like " Nick, pour the cream slowly so that I can take a pic of you pouring" 2s later..... all the cream was emptied out....
We proceeded to the cube after that for some wine tasting, and bought a couple of bottles of the pollyanna polly - It's a really easy drinking chardonnay, perfect for amateur drinkers like myself haha.
And I NEVER leave a winery without buying a dessert wine, so Nick grudgingly let me buy a bottle of the Noble mudpie. Would have easily bought half a dozen if not for the fact that I have seriously bought too many dessert wines over the last few years; Nick is not a fan of dessert wine, so if I were to open a bottle it will just be me drinking and I have seriously been suffering from gastritis over the last few weeks because of poor meal habits due to work and so I'm trying to cut down on my alcohol. Anyway, all my dessert wines are sitting in cartons in my cupboard because I can't bear to drink them / want to cut down on excessive drinking and now we have the problem of how are we gonna get them all back to Singapore :/
Nope. They're not for re-sale haha.
Just us in front of the cube (:
Open everyday 12-4.30pm
