TOKYO: Gyukatsu Motomura review 2

I have previously blogged about Gyukatsu Motomura ( click) when they first started becoming a hit amongst Japanese and tourists. I mean, all along we've only knew about Katsu curry ( chicken cutlet ), Tonkatsu ( pork cutlet) and suddenly Beef cutlet came up?! what's gonna be next? Fish cutlet?
Oh wait, they have that already, that's fish and chips right?

The first time I had this beef cutlet, I went to their original hole in the wall shop, then suddenly I realised that they're starting to grow everywhere!
Nick's parents were shopping and they stumbled across this branch located very conveniently at Nihonbashi Coredo shopping mall.

This is a really nice place to eat at, every thing is very nicely spaced out, gone are the days when people can mistakenly cook their beef on someone else's hot plate hehehehhehehe. I mean, if you still mistakely cook your beef on someone else's hot plate, either you're totally mentally not with it or you're trying to hit on the stranger :/

Nick's parents really love this restaurant. Nick tells me that they have been going around recommending this restaurant to all their friends.

I'm super greedy, I ordered extra beef and EXTRA MENTAIKO.
I LOVE MENTAIKO

LOOK AT THE BEEF!

This time I'm cooking it correctly on my own hot plate heheh

The best combo is beef, mentaiko and grated yam

YUM!

NAGANO: Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, Enza cafe and ramen

Absolutely going crazy with all the busy-ness
I was on call over the weekend and guess what? I WAS CALLED BACK INTO HOSPITAL TO WORK BOTH SATURDAY AND SUNDAY because doctors call in sick all the time.
Sometimes I really feel perhaps I should start calling in sick too, but I always feel super bad because if I called in sick, means someone else on call would have to cover me. And it really sucks to have to cover someone on the weekend.
My personal feeling is that unless you're on your deathbed, ONE SHOULD NEVER CALL IN SICK OVER THE WEEKEND.

I'm on call again this weekend, and I bet you 99% I'm gonna get called back into work.

This was supposed to be a food blog, but Nick has urged me to blog abit of our travel itinerary especially at places where research may be a little bit difficult.

We took 1 day off our ski schedule to visit the snow monkey park ( Jigokudani)
Nick and his parents initially wanted to join a tour group, however, I managed to convince them to let me plan out everything. I mean, sure, the tour group may make things more convenient, but I really like my freedom and free and easy planning.
If you google, you may realise that it's actually really difficult finding access to jigokudani from nozawa, I remember spending a long time trying to piece bits and pieces of information. So today, I'm going to try and make it easy for you who may be in my shoes last year.

There is a bus stop just outside Nozawa Grand Hotel that takes you to the snow monkey resor

t
We were the only passengers on the bus.. I think most tourists must have joined a tour - I mean after all, several websites online did say " It is very difficult to access the snow monkey resort by public transport "
I super beg to differ by the way!
I really do not know why people say it's difficult to access snow monkey resort by public transport, my feeling is that perhaps they're lucky enough to have very smooth sailing lives...

The whole bus trip lasts 1hour 5mins.

And then there's a LONG track from the bus station to the entrance of the snow monkey resort before you actually reach the onsen where the snow monkey soak themselves in.
They really make you work hard to see them, hey!
So we decided to have some ramen at Enza cafe before our long trek.
This chicken based ramen was so good! I didn't realise until while writing this post that the chef here used to be a ramen chef of a michelin restaurant! No wonder!

At the start of our trek

Almost reaching the onsen!

FINALLY!

Whilst it's super rewarding to FINALLY reach your destination, you know whats the bad part?
You can't miraculously teleport back to the base. I think we took 1hour hiking here, which means... IT'S GONNA BE ANOTHER 1 HOUR HIKING DOWN! :o

Thankfully I have a very creative boyfriend who always tries to make things fun for me.
We starting making snowballs on the way down

Nick is a natural at making snowballs. Every tourist was so impressed at the size of his " egg"

putting our snowballs to good use

I decided to make us a reservation at kamukura snow dome village. I thought it would be really cool! And really out of the ordinary.
I heard it was really popular with locals, AND I wanted to do things that locals would do!

Our snow dome

Yup, the whole point was to have dinner ( nabe) in the snowdome.

Good lord, it was a good experience, but NEVER AGAIN. I was SO COLD, and the volunteer bus only came 1 hour after our dome lights went out ( meaning, it was dining time up for us )
All the other locals happily drove away in their cars.. leaving us... and 2 hongkong travellers.. waiting.. in .. the.. cold.. at.. the.. bus.. stop........

NOZAWA ONSEN: Where to Stay and Where/What to eat

Alright, so over the last few days, apart from working, I've also been very busy trying to plan our January Niseko trip. And it's very energy and time consuming because we've never been to Niseko so we really have to start researching everything from ground zero.
And sometimes you really wonder " where do I start? "

For me, I always start with " what to eat in ( insert place) "

So because I'm feeling extra nice today, ( actually know la, I just like being helpful :p ) I shall
type this concise post introducing Nozawa onsen to you, so that you don't have to go thru what I went thru last year, trying to piece together information from everywhere while I research Nozawa.

This is a very useful self explanatory picture. Essentially tells the the schedule of the shinkansen you can take from Tokyo, what time it reaches Iiyama and the nozawa liner schedule that will take you to nozawa chuo station.

Stay
I highly recommend the family runned ryokan we stayed at - Nakajimaya Ryokan ( click).

The reasons why I really like this place, and will definitely stay here again if I'm ever back in Nozawa are:

1) It is really near the nozawa chuo bus terminal ( about 10 mins walk). However the hosts are really nice, they offer to pick and send you to the bus terminal in their mini van for free ( that black van in the background on the left)

2) It's located on Bear street which is a quick 5 min walk from the main shopping street - O yu Dori

3) It's a family runned ryokan, both husband and wife speak really good english.

4) They serve REALLY yummy and filling breakfast - perfect energy booster before you hit the slopes. There's 4 different breakfast menu and it rotates everyday so unless you stay more than 4 days, you'll never eat a repeated menu.

5) There's an onsen in the ryokan itself, but if you like bathing with many people, there's a public onsen/bath located just opposite the ryokan

6) There's a taxidermied bear just as you enter the Ryokan.
hehehhe, I've never seen a taxidermied bear before. Don't recall seeing any taxidermied animals before actually hmmm.

Whilst it's aesthetically alright to place the bear facing the entrance, however, if I were them, I'll have the bear standing upright and just beside the entrance.  I'll also install a motion activated sound sensor, such that when someone passes the entrance there'll be a growling bear sound.
Can you imagine, if you're a burglar and it's dark at night and you come into the ryokan and suddenly instead of a guard dog you see this HUGE grizzly bear just towering over you growling?!
WAH, SO SCARY.

Eat

1) Wagyu Tei ( read here )

5) Haus St Anton  on oyu dori street

I highly recommend going to this place for dessert after dinner. They serve the BEST ice cream in town! my favourite is the buckwheat ( soba) flavoured ice cream.

If you're feeling peckish after a ski run, they also serve bao outside their shop. However, I think if you're having a good dinner after, i think you should keep your stomach for dinner and dessert instead of wasting space on this bao.

6) Nagano Apple

Nagano is very famous for their apples! There's alot of shops on the shopping street selling them. Enxin bought 5 apples from this old lady whose shop was just filled with apples.
We bought the most expensive which cost 1000yen for each. So good and crunchy!

7) Nozawana (野沢菜)

Nick insisted I make a special mention about this famous nozawa pickled vegetable. We have this vegetable at breakfast everyday and it's really nick's, mine, enxin's and yihan's nightmare.
I guess this must be an acquired taste just like pickles. We really dislike it.
But hey, it's famous, so you really ought to give it a try :D
And the Japanese love it! Nick's dad had a special request by his friend who's living in Tokyo to buy 1kg of this nozawana back for him :/

Wah, okay, I was gonna continue to blog about where to take a day trip to, but I'm just so traumatised thinking about the nozawana i feel like my soul has left my body.
So I guess we shall have to wait till the next post :/
